Curb Sugar Cravings this Holiday Season

I think we have all heard at some point to stay away from sugar.  Dentists cringe, nutritionists dry heave, and the "Whole Foods" crowd simply shake their heads at the idea of chowing down Halloween candy with reckless abandon.

When you have broccoli going bad in your fridge but opt to inhale the cookie aisle from the grocery store, there may be more behind these cravings.

Here are just a few tips on what may help you curb your cravings for the sweet stuff:
  • Drink more water!  When you are dehydrated, your body feels the same hunger sensation for thirst as when you're hungry.  When you get a craving for something, drink a tall glass of water and wait several minutes to see if you're authentically hungry.
  • You may be lacking nutrients.  If your body is lacking in essential nutrients, you may have cravings to satisfy the missing nutrients.  Overall inadequate nutrition produces cravings for fake energy like caffeine and other non-nutritional foods.
  •  Self sabotage.  If you're having success with a meal plan, then find yourself inhaling a box of donuts, you may be satisfying a deeper need to stay unbalanced and may be related to emotional upsets.  It can also be a response to low blood sugar and is likely to create drastic mood swings.
Sugar in moderation and having a plan will give you tremendous odds of success this holiday season.  If you work to stay hydrated, get your nutrition from healthy foods and supplements, and have a stay-away-from-sugar action plan, you will feel incredible as the abundant piles of treats are no longer your kryptonite.
